Odour detection Flashcards
What are the 4 major types of behaviour for An. Gambiae?
Age genetics = sex pheromones
Egg larvae = oviposition pheromones
Plant volatiles = flowering status extra floral nectar
Host odours = genetics, age, diet
Olfactory appendages name the 4 types and their detections?
Maxillary palp = detected 1 octen 3-ol, CO2 sensing organ
Proboscis = short range detection (lactic acid)
Antenna = Long range detection
Sensilla = different shapes and sizes.
What is Odurant binding proteins (OBPs) and what do they do?
Cross the sensilla find dendrites and pores
Odour molecules go into the pour
OBPs are soluble and will carry the molecules across the lymph
As lymph is hydrophilic and semiochemicals are hydrophobic
What are olfactory proteins (ORs) and what do they do?
Once it gets to tend dendrite has to bind. Binding to olfactory receptors. Carries out an action potential, leads to depolarisation of the olfactory receptor neurone. Neurone expressing ORs and IRs respond to odours from humans.
