Q

What are the two gonotrophic cycles from a mosquito?

A

Circadian - Approx. 1 day, generated endogenously by biological clocks but set by exogenous factors such as daily cycle of light and dark.

Gonotrophic - Is a cycle of bloodfeeding, egg production, and egg laying. Duration is affected by temperature.

Q

How does a female mosquito and male mosquito mate and find each other?

A

Male and female activity is synchronised at dusk.
Male swarming and female entry into swarms
Erection of fibrillar on male antennae at dusk for female detection.

Q

What is MAG?

A

Male accessory gland secretion or MAG, a protein known at matron. Acts the same as a prostate in humans. MAG transferred by the male with seminal fluid and absorbed into the haemolymph of the female.

Q

Does MAG ever change activity?

A

Yes, from early evening flights to late night host seeking flights. It stimulates oviposition.

Q

Whats the effect of plasmodium on anopheles?

A

Low activity in parasitised group while blood is digested and eggs develop may be due to low quality infective blood meal rather than parasites.
Activity decreases permanently in the parasitised group
Effect due to competition for nutrients or damage midgut and salivary glands.
Sporozoite infected mosquito are more attracted to host than uninfected.

Q

Whats the effect of filariasis on anopheles?

A

L3 larvae damage muscle fibres during emergence impair flight muscles
Heavily parasitized mosquitoes less important in transmission
Behaviour is pathological detrimental to mosquito and to parasite.
