Odontogenesis Flashcards
What is the definition of histogenesis?
differentiation of undifferentiated cells to make new tissues
What are the stages of odontogenesis
- initiation stage
- bud stage
- cap stage
- bell stage
- crown stage/late bell stage
What week is the first sign of tooth development?
week 6
In the 6th week, what do signs of tooth development are there?
We get a condensation of mesenchyme in response to FGF8
The primary epithelial band starts to grow inwards towards this condensation of mesenchyme
in relation to tooth development, what happens in the 7th week?
The primary epithelial band differentiates into the dental lamina and the vestibular lamina
the dental lamina interacts with the mesenchyme
the vestibular lamina pushes down into the mesenchyme and is proliferating
in relation to tooth development what do we get in the 8th week?
The vestibular lamina is continuing to proliferate downwards
The dental lamina has formed the dental bud
In relation to tooth development what do we get in the 9th week?
signals have told the cells of the vestibular lamina to die off
which tissue initiates tooth development
epithelium initially has the odontogenic potential, then the ectomesenchyme
What tooth structures do the epithelium (ectoderm) give rise to?
enamel
hyaline layer of the root
What tooth structures does the mesenchyme (ectomesenchyme) give rise to?
dentine
pulp
cementum
periodontium - PDL and bone
