Economically beneficial to community.
-community based tourism being developed (teaching locals to become boatmen, guides, dolphin spotters). TOURISM=STAKEHOLDER (greatly contributed to economy and social aspects of Odisha)
-provides protection (hurricane shelters). These are multipurpose shelters-used as schools when not in use.
-planting of mangroves acts as a defence line and can protect the surrounding land form the effects of sea level rise.
Mangrove planting
Provides new habitats and Protects land from storm surges and flooding.
- the faster the sea level rises, the faster the mangroves accumulate sediment in their roots resulting as a buffer against oncoming waves and storm surges. Reduces impact.
- can reduce storm surge water levels of several km.
- can keep up with rise of 25mm a year (x8 current global rate of sea level rise).
