Eustatic And Isostatic Changes Flashcards
Eustatic change
Global change in sea levels as a result of a fall or rise in the sea level itself
Isostatic change
Local changes in the sea level as a result of the land itself rising and falling in relative to the sea (REBOUND)
Causes of sea level rise
Water volume
-climate change
-thermal expansion (volume of water increases as it gets warmer)
-land ice melting (melting of glaciers and ice sheets)
Subsistence (coastal areas sinking-often due to groundwater extraction. Effectively make sea level higher).
Major changes in sea level in the last 10,000 years
Weight of ice sheets on north of England forced land down. Rebound occurs causing southern England to submerge.
ISOSTATIC CHANGE
Tectonics
Larger oceans=lower sea levels
Smaller oceans=higher sea levels
THE DEPTH OF THE SET ANOUNT OF WATER ON THE EARTH CAN ALTER DEPENDING ON THE VOLUME OF AREA IT HAS TO FILL
