Coastal Processes Flashcards
Traction
LARGE particles like boulders are PUSHED along the SEA BED by THE FORVE OF THE WATER.
Saltation
PEBBLE sized particles are BOUNCED along the sea/river bed by THE FORCE OF THE WATER
Suspension
SMALL particles like SILT and CLAY are CARRIED along in the water
Solution
SOLUBLE MATERIALS DISSOLVE in the water and are carried along.
LSD
The movement of material driven to the coast by the waves.
The direction of the wind is the direction the swath carries the sediment and deposits it on the coastline. The backwash then carries it back out to the sea (usually at a right angle to the coast).
Abrasion
When pebbles grind along a rock platform-eventually the rock becomes smooth
Attrition
When rocks that the sea carries knock against each other. Become smaller and more rounded.
Undercutting
Lines of weakness (joints or cracks in rocks/cliffs/headlands) become enlarges and develop small sea caves. This can often lead to the formation of stacks, or wave cut platforms.
Deposition
The laying of sediment carried by wind, water or ice. It’s deposited due to lack of energy (no longer enough energy to carry continuously).
Wave quarrying
When high energy waves hit the cliff face and have the power to remove large chunks of rock.
Erosion
Geographical process in which earthen materials are worn away.
Mass movement
Large amounts of soil and Rick debris moving down slopes due to the force of gravity.
