odd sentences Flashcards
“Last year I had the chance to go study abroad.”
El año pasado tuve la oportunidad de ir a estudiar al extranjero.
En el extranjero no good? You state position with “en” and you often see the verb “estar” used with it. “a” indicates movement here and you see it used after verbs like “ir” that involve motion to a point.the “a estudiar” part is using the “a” for another reason. “ir + a + verb infinitive” part is used for “go (do) verb”. Lets forget that part as you say. The “ir + a + specifier + noun” part is why you cannot use “en” here. You have movement to a noun (ir + a + el + extranjero). “Last year I had the chance to go abroad” = “El año pasado tuve la oportunidad de ir al extranjero”. “Estoy en el extranjero” = “I am (at) abroad” Note here “at” is not used in English but it would make prefect sense elsewhere “I am at school” = “estoy en la escuela”.
