What are the two forms of candida?
Hyphae and yeast
Who is more susceptible for increased oral candida?
Immunocompromised or immunosuppressed pt.s
What is the main type of candida found in the mouth?
Candida albicans
What is erythematous candidiasis and when is it seen?
Most common Seen in post abx use Looks like red tongue Red spots/patches on palate May cause burning sensation
What is pseudomembranous candidiasis and when is it seen?
Most common in immunosuppressed
Yellow/white plaques (like curdled milk)
Affecting mucosal surface
What is hyperplastic candidiasis and when is it seen?
Rare
Seen in heavy smokers
White plaque infiltrated by candida hyphae
On commissures of oral mucosa
What are the 3 graders of denture induced stomatitis?
1 - localised erythema
2 - generalised erythema of most/all of denture bearing area
3 - palatal papillary hyperplasia
What is angular chelitis?
Symmetrical erythematous fissures on skin of commissures
What causes angular chelitis?
Candida albicans
Staph aureus +/- streptococci
How is oral candida diagnosed?
History Clinical exam Direct smear - not really used due to commensal candida in the mouth Culture Biopsy
