What is the colour coding system of treating patients with oral mucosal lesions?
Green = can treat with disease Yellow = disease monitored by dentist with specialist unit Red = sent to specialist referral centre
What is an oral lesion SPOT?
Flat lesion reflecting change in mucosal colour (smooth/granular)
What is an oral lesion PATCH/PLAQUE?
Thickened lesion with slightly wavy surface
What is the difference between an oral erosion and ulceration?
Erosion - epithelium only
Ulceration - deeper loss of tissue
What is an oral blister (bullae)?
Lesions with fluid in/under epithelium
Larger than vesicles
Not great in numbers
Can burst and form EROSIONS
What is an oral vesicle?
Small pockets of liquid in/under epithelium
Not larger than a few mm
Can have hundreds
What is pemphigus bullous disorder?
Intra-epithelial blisters - altered adhesion between keratinocytes
What is pemphigoid bullous disorder?
Sub-epithelial blisters - altered adhesion at basement membrane
What are papillary-verracous lesions?
Raised mucosal lesions
Localised/ widespread
White/ red
Defined by thickness and surface features (digitations/chunky?)
