Ocular Anatomy 4 Conjunctiva Flashcards
What are the components of the conjunctiva
Palpebral conj
Bulbar conj
Continuous at fornices
What is the palpebral conj attached to
Tarsal plates
What is the fornical conjunctiva attached to
Fascial expansions of the extraocular muscle sheaths allowing the conjunctiva to be drawn upward or downwards as the recti contract
Where is the superior fornix in relation to the limbus? inferior?
Superior fornix is 10mm from the limbus, inferior fornix is 8mm from the limbus
Lateral fornix extends 14mm from the limbus, passing posteriorly to the equator of the globe
Where does the bulbar conjunctiva attach?
Lies loosely over the sclera and joint with the corneal epithelium 1mm anterior to the sclerocorneal limbus
What is the blood supply to the palpebral conjucntiva
Medial and lateral palpebral arteries divide to form marginal and peripheral arcades in both lids
What is the blood supply to the peripheral bulbar conjunctiva?
Branches from the peripheral arcade from medial and lateral palpebral arteries
What is the blood supply to the limbal conjunctiva
Branches from the anterior ciliary arteries
Where do conjunctival veins drain?
Superior and inferior ophthalmic veins
What is the innervation of the bulbar conjunctiva
Long ciliary nerves
from nasociliary division of the ophthalmic nerve V1
What is the structure of the conjunctiva
Mucous membrane consisting of epithelium and underlying lamina propria
What epithelium forms the palpebral, bulbar and limbal conjucntiva
Palpebral - stratified squamous epithelium
Bulbar - stratified columnar epithelium
Limbal - stratified squamous continuous with the corneal epithelium
What changes are found in the conjunctiva at the limbus
Stratified squamous epithelium continuous with the corneal epithelium
Lamina propria form papillae
Where are goblet cells found (to form the tear film)?
Inferonasal bulbar conjunctiva
