Oct 28 Lecture: Water Resources Flashcards
water use vs water consumption
water use= the water is returned back to the hydrological cycle after being used
- eg industrial, municipal, rural water use
water consumption= little water is returned back to its point of origin
- eg. agriculture use
what is one way of bringing water to areas that have little water available?
- issue?
aqueducts! = structure built to move water
issue= the diversion can cause problems in the source regions if too much water is diverted
2 methods to purify existing water sources
- filtration
2. distillation
filtration=
water is filtered through membranes that screen out impurities
- doesn’t work well when there’s a high soluble component
distillation=
heating the water and collecting the vapor
- can be used to obtain useable water from seawater (desalination)
what’s 1 problem with distillation and a solution
problem= heat source is expensive (coal/ gas/ fuel)
solution= engineered reverse osmosis
