Define obsession
unwanted thought, urge, or image that the person cannot get rid of
Define compulsion
repetitive behavior or mental acts one feels driven to perform as a result of an obsession
What are two key questions to ask when taking a HPI from an obsessive compulsive patient?
- Do you think about “x” activity until you perform that task?
- How do you feel when you don’t perform “x”?
Describe what is necessary to diagnose obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Presence of obsessions, compulsions, or both for 1+ hours per day.
Describe what is necessary to diagnose body dysmorphic disorder. (3 parameters)
- Preoccupation with 1+ perceived appearance flaws that are slightly observed or not observed at all
- Repetitive mental acts or behaviors related to appearance
- Symptoms must not be better explained by eating disorder
