What are two keys to conducting a psychiatric interview?
- multidimensional understanding of the biopsychosocial elements of the disorder
- collaboration with the patient to develop a patient-centered treatment plan
List 5 tips to conduct a good psychiatric interview.
- Relax
- Private interview space: private
- Posture –> open and actively engaged
- Be on level with patient and make eye contact
- Touch may or may not be appropriate - Pt comfort
What are 3 components of a good psychiatric HPI?
- OLD CARTS
- General ?’s: mood/sleep/appetite - changes?, Triggers?
- Medications and/or psychotherapy improving symptoms or adverse effects/adherence
What in the past medical history may be relevant in the psychiatric interview?
Past psych/rehab admissions, treatment (which meds were effective and which were not), family Hx
What in the patient’s developmental history may be relevant in the psychiatric interview?
prenatal/birth history, milestones (walking/talking), siblings/Hx of divorce, education, abuse/neglect
What in the patient’s social history may be relevant in the psychiatric interview?
relationships/marital status, employment, living situation, military Hx, legal Hx, transportation status
What questions are important to ask related to substance abuse?
Types of abuse, frequency, last use, withdrawal symptoms, impacts on relationships or employment, longest length of sobriety
