Ocean Flashcards
Pacific ocean
It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south. It is the biggest and deepest ocean.
Atlantic ocean
It covers approximately 20% of Earth’s surface and about 29% of its water surface area. is the second-largest of the world’s five oceans
Indian ocean
covering 70,560,000 km² or ~19.8% of the water on Earth’s surface. It is bounded by Asia to the north, Africa to the west and Australia to the east. is the third-largest of the world’s five oceanic divisions
Arctic ocean
It spans an area of approximately 14,060,000 km² and is known as the coldest of all the oceans. is home to several million people.
Southern ocean
also known as the Antarctic Ocean, comprises the southernmost waters of the world ocean, generally taken to be south of 60° S latitude and encircling Antarctica. you can join the Antarctic Swimmers Club with a brisk but brief plunge in the Antarctic Ocean.
Salinity
the measure of dissolved salts in water.
surface zone
the measure of how much exposed area a solid object has, expressed in square units.
Thermocline
the transition layer between the warmer mixed water at the surface and the cooler deep water below.
deep zone
the depth at which light begins to dwindle, typically around 200 meters (656 feet).
water cycle
the continuous movement of water within the Earth and atmosphere.
Evaporation
the process that changes liquid water to gaseous water
Condensation
the process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water
Precipitation
any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls back to the earth.
continental shelf
the slope seaward from the shelf to the upper edge of a continental rise or the point where there is a general reduction of slope.
continental slope
the slope seaward from the shelf to the upper edge of a continental rise or the point where there is a general reduction of slope.
