define OCD
characterised by either obsession (recurring thoughts, images etc) or compulsions ( repetitive behaviour such as hand washing)
- most people suffer from both
- obsessions are cognitive
- compulsions are behavioural
DSM-5 categories of OCD
- trichotillomania = compulsive hair pulling
- hoarding disorder = gathering of possesions, inability to part with anything, regardless of its value
- exhortation disorder = compulsive skin picking
what are the behavioural characteristics of OCD?
- compulsions are repetitive
- compulsions reduce anxiety
- avoidance
behavioural: REPETITIVE COMPULSIONS
- feel compelled to repeat a behaviour
- e.g. hand washing, tidying
behavioural: COMPULSIONS REDUCE ANXIETY
- behaviours are performed in an attempt to manage the anxiety
- e.g. hand washing is a response to a fear of germs
behavioural: AVOIDANCE
- keep away from situations that trigger it
- may lead to avoiding ordinary situations
- disrupts normal living
what are the emotional characteristics of OCD?

- an unpleasant emotional experience that can be overwhelming
