occurs when someone is unable to cope with the ordinary demands of day to day living
- cant meet basic standards of hygiene and nutrition
- cannot hold down a job or maintain relationships

- easy to label non-standard lifestyle choices as abnormal
- some people may choose to deviate from social norms and arent failing to function adequately
- people who make unusual choices are at risk of being labelled abnormal and their freedom of choice being restricted
