what is French and Raven’s (1959) theory?
five forms of power attempts to determine what it is to make someone powerful in a given situation
reward power is typically financial when talking about leading a company
expert powers achieved when someone finds themselves based on knowledge and experience
legitimate power comes along with being appointed to a certain position
coercive power is based on ability to take things away
referent power is power can be based on popularity, attitude or charm
what is Holmes (1998) theory?
found that female managers seemed more likely to negotiate consensus than male managers and take time to ensure all members are in agreement
they take more time to make sure everyone genuinely agrees with what has been decided
what is Holmes and Stubbe’s (2003) theory?
when someone with power talks to someone with less power, they can decide to downplay or assert their authority
people give authority to people they like
