what is Eckert’s (2000) theory?

A

studied jocks and burnouts school in Detroit
burnouts used non standard forms to reflect their rebellions and disliking of school; whereas jocks were sociable,
middle class who wanted to do well and conformed to standard english
their social groups and language used were different which supports the idea that our language is determined on our social group

A

teens from working class used ‘innit’ more than middle class teens
teens from middle class used ‘yeah’ more than working class teens
there is also evidence that ‘okay’ was used by boys more than girls; though both use ‘innit’ ‘right’ and ‘yeah’ equally
