Based in the belief that people have a need an right to participate in meaningful occupations
Two ideas were linked
- Relationship between occupation and health is influenced by political, social, & cultural factors
- Enabling client empowerment through occupation

Occupational alienation
Occupational alienation: situations in which people experience daily life as meaningless and purposeless
ex: negative work experience
Occupational deprivation
Occupational deprivation: situations in which people’s needs for meaningful and health promoting occupations go unmet or are systematically denied
ex: children deprived of higher education opportunities due to economic limitations
Occupational imbalance
Occupational imbalance: situations in which sufficient variations in daily occupations needed to sustain well-being are rendered impossible due to personal or societal circumstances
ex: overoccupied, occupationally overburdened.
Link between OT and Occupational Justice
Occupational therapists help people realize their potentials but have often neglected to understand how people are really able to fully participate once they leave direct OT services.
Therapists must become increased public awareness and act as advocates on a broad and global level
