What did Giles do?
Giles developed the accommodation theory. Convergence is moving closer to the speaker. Upward convergence is moving more polite and downward convergence is speaking more regionally. Divergence is moving away from the way the speaker is speaking.

Losing face is carrying out an action that may destroy the face you’re trying to show
Saving face is when your face is threatened but you manage to save it by acting in the way you want your face to be
Face needs are things that respect the face you’re present
Face threatening acts can damage the face that you are trying to present to others
