What is a discourse community?
A group of people involved in and communicating about a particular topic, issue or in a particular field

A broadly agreed set of common public goals

What is goal orientation?
When Lexis in the workplace focuses on specific tasks or goals
What is co-operative principle?
People work together to communicate
What are positive face needs and negative face needs?
Positive face needs are those associated with feeling appreciated and valued
Negative face needs are the desire that feel independent and not be imposed upon
What is a preferred response?
A second part of an adjacency pair that fits in with what the speaker in the first part wants to hear
What is speaker support?
Words or phrases that show attention in agreement and encourage a speaker to carry on talking
What is asymmetry?
When one speaker has more to power or knowledge than the other speaker
What is inter organisational communication?
Communication that takes place between different organisations
What is intra-organisational communication?
Communication that takes place within an organisation
What does the plain English campaign aim?
Aims to bring clarity to the workplace through revising documentation, letters, forms, instructions etc. In order to reduce misunderstandings from people who read the texts
What is are allowable contributions?
There may be restrictions on what kind of contributions are considered as allowable
What is to exclude ?
Use language which is used amongst specific groups with particular knowledge or understanding

To use language that is designed to include groups of people
