Occlusion for conventional dentures Flashcards
What are the jaw registration steps?
1 - Adjust upper record block for retention
2 - Adjust upper record block for tooth position
3 - Adjust upper record block for occlusal planes
4 - Lower tooth position and horizontal jaw relationship
5 - Measure vertical dimension and establish face height
6 - Record registration
7 - Select shade, mould and setting
What is the acronym when adjusting record blocks?
L - Lip support
I - Incisal level
M - Midline
B - Buccal corridor
O - Occlusal plane
When checking lip support what should you check?
- Recommended nasiolabial angle is 90°
- Actual in edentulous patients in 96°
- Use Alma gauge for checking tooth position
When checking incisal level what should you check>
- Use visual judgement or pics of natural teeth
- Lip level
- Lip during speech
- Age
- 1-2mm of show
- Mark on lip line and canine line and midline
How to check occlusal plane in upper record blocks?
- Use interpupillary line for anterior
- ## Use ala-tragus line for posterior (parallel)
What is the neutral zone?
- Potential space between lips and cheeks on one side and tongue on other
- Area where the forces between tongue and cheek are equal
What is the muscular position?
- Position of closure produced by balanced muscle activity raising mandible from rest to initial contact
What is occlusal vertical dimension?
- Distance between set point on maxilla an set point on mandible when denture or natural teeth in maximum intercuspation
- OVD
What is resting vertical dimension?
- RVD
- When mandible is at rest with patient upright
What does excessive freeway space give?
- reduced masticatory efficiency
- Overclosed facial appearance
- Cheek biting
- TMJ symptoms
What does reduced (inadequate) freeway space give?
- Excessive load on denture bearing area
- Continuous muscular activity result in pain
- Aesthetic complaints like teeth too big
What is aim mm for freeway space and how can you get this?
- Use willis bite gauge
- 2-4mm
How do you record the registration?
- Cut notches on upper and lower blocks
- Use wax or jaw reg paste
- If using jaw reg use adhesive to upper and lower blocks and paste to lower
- Ensure seat back on model
