Occlusion and Malocclusion Flashcards
what is ideal occlusion?
anatomically perfect arrangement of teeth
what is normal occlusion?
acceptable variation from ideal
- all teeth well aligned
- no crowding
- class 1 incisor/molar relationship
what is malocclusion?
irregularity of occlusion beyond accepted range of normal
what is class 1 malocclusion?
squint teeth
what is class 2 malocclusion?
big overjet
what is class 3 malocclusion?
lower teeth further in front of uppers
what are genetic causes of malocclusion?
skeletal pattern
size of jaws/teeth
syndromes - cleft lip and palate
what is class 1 skeletal pattern?
maxilla only few mm ahead of mandible
what is class 2 skeletal pattern?
maxilla ahead of mandible
what is class 3 skeletal pattern?
small maxilla and large mandible or a combo
what about teeth/jaws causes crowding?
small jaws, large teeth
what about teeth/jaws causes spacing?
large jaws, small teeth
what about lips can cause malocclusion?
incompetent lips
top teeth allowed to come forward
what about trauma can cause malocclusion?
more chance in a class 2 - intrusion
what sort of tumor could cause malocclusion?
odontogenic tumor
what local factors can cause malocclusion?
supernumeraries hypodontia fraenum - midline diastema retained deciduous - prevents eruption early loss of deciduous - loss of space and crowding
what is IOTN?
index of otho tx need
what does IOTN do and what are the components?
measures severity of malocclusion
dental health aspect and aesthetic aspect
what is IOTN 1/2/3/4/5
- no tx needed
- little tx req’d
- borderline
4/5. tx needed
