Normal Facial Development Flashcards
what 2 types of ways are bone laid down in facial growth?
endochondreal
intramembranous
in the skull, how do the bones join together?
by sutures - non moveable
and joints - TMJ - moveable
how many fontanelles are in the clavarium and what do they allow?
6 fontanelles - allow compression of head at birth
how is bone laid down in the clavarium?
by intramembranous ossification
how does the clavrium grow?
fontanelles close and bone is laid down at the sutures and on the surface, grows as a whole in response to brain growth
what is craniosynostosis?
premature fusing of the sutures in calvarium giving an abnormal shaped head
how is the cranial base formed?
there are 2 main areas of cartiladge that lay down bone by endochondreal ossification
what are the 3 sychondroses of the cranial base?
sphenooccipital fuses @ puberty
sphenoethmoidal fuses @ 7yrs
intersphenoid
what is the nasomaxillary complex made up of?
maxilla
nasal septum
zygomatic bones
how does the nasomaxillary complex grow?
intramembranous ossification at sutures and surface remodelling
what way does the nasomaxillary complex move during growth?
forward and down as cranial base grows
how does the mandible form?
endochondreal activity at the condyle
periosteal activity and surface remodelling
when is facial growth complete for girls?boys?
16-17yrs
17-19yrs
at what age can there be late growth of the mandible?
20yrs
what soft tissues can influence the position of the dental arches?
lips
tongue
cheeks
