Occlusion Flashcards
3 rules to follow (BCE)
B - bilateral and even occlusion (check with articulating paper - when tooth interferences occur jaw will slide upon full closure)
C - canine guidance causes disocclusion of all posterior teeth
E* - uninterrupted envelope of function
*when chewing: md swings laterally, forward, when closing returns back into centric stop
How may an excessive overbite affect denture fabrication?
have to open up bite, otherwise no room for denture
Effect on incisors if envelope of function is violated.
thinning from wear
What would you do for pt who comes in w gaps in front teeth and you are suspecting issue is occlusion?
- take impressions
- make study models
- articulate in CR
- see where early/contact/interferences are at with help of green paint-like ???
reproduce in patients mouth
benefits of canine/anteiror guidance
takes pressure of posteriors in lateral excursion as less force of mastication as you move further from the back
What determines anterior guidance
shape n position of anterior teeth
Which bite disorder has more detrimental effects to teeth and TMJ?
deep bite
What exacerbates deep bite?
lack of posteriors
What effect does parafunction have on TMJ?
ongoing remodelling
Downside of NTI splint
can cause anterior open bite
What is it called if more than 1 tooth contacting on lateral movements and what is a downside?
group function
can cause parafunction and occlusal wear
What is CO and CR. Benefits of CR
CO - habitual bite
CR - relationship of mx to md when head of condyle is in most posterior portion of distal incline of glenoid fossa
reproducible
What is VDO?
VD in CR
What may be a clue of occlusal wear?
steep curve of spee
