Obtaining And Using Metals Flashcards
Where are most metals found and what has usually happened to them
They are useually found with ores and have undergone oxidation
How separate the metals from their oxides
Called reduction either through heating with carbon, the carbon displaces the oxygen as it is more reactive. If the metal is more reactive than carbon you have to use electrolysis to reduce it
What are properties of metals
Metals are strong, the good conductors of heat and electricity. Good for bridges and car bodies .
Uses of copper, aluminium and gold
Aluminium has a low density and corrosion resistant so it is good for window frames electricity cables and aircraft. Copper is hard and strong and has a high melting point. It is good conductor of electricity and is ductile so useful for wires and pipes as it does not react with water. Gold is shiny and is used for Jewellery as is it corrosion resistant.
How can you make metals more useful
You can turn them into alloys this makes it harder for the layers to slide over each other making them stronger. Smart alloys can bend and then when heated return to their original shape.
Why recycle metals?
It uses less resources, it uses less energy compared to mining and refining new ones, it is cheaper and it creates less waste.
