Materials From The Earth Flashcards
Describe sedimentary rock formation and give examples
Sedimentary rocks - formed from layers of sediment at the bottom of lakes or the sea. Over millions of years the layers get buried under the weight pressing down on them, this squeezes the water out.
Limestone and chalk
Describe the formation of metamorphic rock and give examples
Formed by intense heat and pressure on sedimentary rocks over long periods of time.
Marble is formed from limestone or chalk.
Describe the formation of igneous rocks and give an example
Igneous rocks are formed when molten magma pushed up into the crust before cooling. Intrusive is formed inside the volcano and has large crystals, extrusive formed above the ground cools quickly and form small crystals.
Describe the uses of Limestone
Fine buildings are often made of limestone blocks.
It is used to make cement concrete and glass. It can neutralise acidic soil, it is used in power station chimneys to neutralise sulphur dioxide.
Describe problems with limestone.
Quarrying it makes huge holes. It creates a lot of dust and noise, it needs to be removed by Lorraine’s causing more pollution.
Describe the thermal decomposition of limestone
Calcium carbonate to calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
