What is obstructive sleep apnoea?
A
Intermittent closure/collapse of the pharyngeal airway whilst asleep.

What are the risk factors for obstructive sleep apnoea?
A
- Obesity
- Male sex
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

What is used in the diagnosis?
A
Polysomnography- sleep studies
- Measures sats, EEG, HR etc. whilst asleep

What conservative treatment is used?
A
- Weight loss
- Smoking and alcohol advice

What are the signs of obstructive sleep apnoea?
A
- Snoring
- Choking/gasping
- Morning headache
- Somnolence (desire for sleeping in the day)
- Poor memory and attention

What other treatment may be used at night?
A
CPAP via nasal cannula

What surgery may help?
A
Removing pharyngeal obstructions
- Tonsillectomy
- Uvulopalatpharyngoplasty
