fibroadenoma of the great and fibrocystic breast d/o
what is fibroadenoma of the breast?
2nd MC benign breast d/o; MC in late teens-early 20s
composed of glandular & fibrous tissue (collagen arranged in “swirls”)
what are the s/s of fibroadenoma of the breast?
smooth, well-circumscribed, non-tender, freely mobile, rubbery lump in the breast
gradually grows over time & DOESN’T WAX & WANE WITH MENSTRUATION
what’s the tx of fibroadenoma of the breast?
observation - most resorb with time
what’s fibrocystic breast d/o?
fluid-filled breast cyst d/t exaggerated response to hormones
MC breast d/o
what’s the s/s of fibrocystic breast d/o?
multiple, mobile, well demarcated lumps in breast tissue
TENDER AND BILATERAL
No nipple discharge
INCREASE/DECREASE IN SIZE W/ MENSTRUAL HORMONAL CHANGES
how do you dx fibrocystic breast d/o?
U/S
FNA reveals straw-colored fluid (no blood)
what’s the tx for fibrocystic breast d/o?
most resolve spontaneously
can do FNA to remove fluid if symptomatic
what quadrant of the breast is breast cancer most common?
upper out quadrant
what is the MC type of ductal carcinoma breast cancer?
infiltrative ductal carcinoma
what is Paget’s disease the nipple?
a/w breast cancer
chronic eczematous itchy, scaling rash on the nipples and areola
what’s the s/s of inflammatory breast cancer?
red, swollen, warm, itchy breast
Peau d’orange (poor prognosis)
what is the imaging study of choice for initial evaluation of breast masses in women < 40 y/o?
U/S
what’s the best breast cancer screening test? when do you start it?
mammogram
-ACOG says start >/= 40 y/o and annually
