What is the right intention for mediation?
All you really need to do is patiently and persistently hold intentions to respond in specific ways to whatever happens during your meditation. You should proceed in a relaxed manner free from judgment and expectations.
Should you train yourself or discipline yourself to meditate?
Train yourself by holding the intention to try certain things and respond in certain ways. Force and willpower won’t work and they produce negative emotions.
How can you enjoy your practice?
Intentionally savor all feelings of physical comfort and deliberately cultivate the pleasure that can be found in quietness.
When should you meditate?
The same time every day.
Where should you meditate?
In the same place every time.
What should your expectations be for meditation?
None except an intention to meditate. Generate an attitude of faith, trust, and confidence.
What is the remedy for doubt?
Envisioning the possibility of long term success and finding some joy in our practice.
Can willpower prevent mind wandering?
No. Instead, just hold the intention to appreciate the “aha” moment that recognizes mind wandering while gently but firmly redirecting the attention back to the breath. Then, intend to engage with the breath as fully as possible without losing peripheral awareness.
