Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD)
A condition characterised by obsessions & compulsions
Obsessions-cognitive internal intrusive thoughts, e.g there are germs everywhere & they could harm me
Compulsions-Behavioural external repetitive behaviours
e.g. I need to wash my hands each time I touch something to avoid the germs
DSM-5 Categories Of OCD
Recognises related disorders of repetitive behaviour and obsessive thinking
OCD-Characterised by either obsessions (-cognitive internal intrusive , images etc)&
compulsions (repetitive behaviour-hand washing)
Most diagnosed with OCD-compulsions & obsessions
> Trichotoliminia-Compulsive hair pulling
>Hoarding disorder-Compulsive gathering of possessions
Behavioural characteristics OF OCD
How person behaves with OCD
> COMPULSIONS ARE REPETITVE-ppl with OCD feel compelled to repeat a behaviour
e.g hand washing, praying, tidying
> COMPULSIONS REDUCE ANXIETY-
compulsive behaviour performed to reduce anxiety produced by obsessions
E.g Washing hands 7 times in a row reduce anxiety of germs
> AVOIDANCE-behaviour of ppl with OCD characterised by their avoidance
attempt to reduce anxiety by keeping away from situations trigger anxiety

> ANXIETY & DISTRESS -urge to repeat behaviour creates anxiety
> LOW MOOD-OCD accompanied by low mood & lack of enjoyment activities
> GUILT & DISGUST-OCD involves negative emotions such as irrational guilt or digust

OBSESSIVE THOUGHTS Ppl with OCD have obsessive thoughts are reoccurring
e.g feel worried constantly
> COGNITIVE COPING STRATEGIES- ppl adopt coping strategies to deal with obsessions
EXCESSIVE ANXIETY- experience strong thoughts, maintain constant alertness and keep focused
