Mental disorder characterised by low mood & low energy levels
DSM-5 categories of Depression
All forms of depressive disorders are characterised by changes in mood or loss of interest in activities that were once found to be pleasurable
The DSM-5 recognised the following categories of depressive disorder
»Major depression disorder- Severe but often short-term depression
>Persistent depressive disorder-Long-term, reoccurring depression, including sustained major depression
>Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder-Childhood tantrums
>premenstrual dysphoric disorder
Behavioural Characteristics of Depression
How person behaves with depression

Reduced energy levels-ppl with depression have reduced energy levels making them lethergic,lacking energy to do everyday tasks (e.g personal hygeine,washing)

Distruption to sleep & eating behaviours-have reduced sleep(insomnia),appetite may increase/decrease leading to weight gain/loss
. - Aggression & self harm-can lead to physical aggression like self harm-suicide attempts
Emotional Characteristics of Depression
How person feels with depression
- Sadness- a persistent very low mood
- ANGER-People with depression often have angry outbursts; this can be directed at themself or others
- Lowered self esteem-A person with depression is likely to have lower self-esteem, with some suffering from self-loathing, E.g. Hating themselves
Cognitive Characteristics of Depression
How person thinks with depression
> Poor concentration- The person suffering from depression can have poor levels of concentration cannot concetrate on tasks & decision making
Dwelling on negative-will look at negative aspects of situation ignoring positives
Absolutest thinking-jumping to irrational conclusions
