What is OCD?
Recurrent obsessions and compulsions that cause marked distress and interference with social or role functioning.
They are also time consuming
Obsessions
Persistent & repetitive ideas, thoughts or images that are intrusive, unwanted and involuntary. Individuals try to ignore, suppress or neutralise them. Originate witching the mind.
Compulsions
Excessive and repetitive ritualistic behaviours or mental acts that an individual believes must be performed, unless some,thing bad will happen. Reduces anxiety causes by excessive thoughts
Being responsible for causing/failing to prevent harm
checking/reassurance seeking
Symmetry obsessions
Ordering and counting rituals
Contamination obsessions
Washing & cleaning rituals
Repungant obsessions with sex, violence or religion
Praying
Hoarding obsessions about retaining objects
Collecting compulsions
Other common symptoms in children

Treatment- habituation
To make familiar through frequent practice
Treatment- CBT
Graded exposure & response prevention
Exposure- exposing patient to fear d object, action or thought
Response prevention- the process of blocking rituals or minimising avoidance behaviours
Multiple obsessions
2/3s of OCD individuals will have multiple obsessions
Success of treatment
10% of people who enter treatment for OCD will achieve complete remission and 50% alleviation.
Prevalence
1.2% of population are affected by OCD
