observation Flashcards
what is an observation
a study where the experimenter watches and records the behaviours of participants
what are overall strengths of the observational method
we can see what participants actually do and how they actually behave which is more valid than self reports as participants can lie about their behaviours on these
what are overall weaknesses of the observational method
observations can be subject to researcher bias- the researcher might interpret behaviours in an incorrect way, since they’ve already created a hypothesis- this limits validity
what is a covert observation
when the participants do not know they’re being observed e.g researchers may use a one way mirror
what’s good/ bad about covert observations
+
what is an overt observation
when the participants are aware they’re being observed
what’s good/ bad about overt observations
what is a participant observation
where the researcher joins in with the activity being studied as a participant
what’s good/ bad about participant observations
+ the researcher can gain more insight on the group, so can interpret behaviour more accurately
-the researcher can lose objectivity or show researcher bias as they build a rapport with the group they’re working with
what are non participant observations
when the researcher does not join in with the activity being studied and instead observes as an outsider
what’s good/ bad about non participant observations
+ the researcher can focus on the observation and is unlikely to lose objectivity when observing from outside the group
- the researcher has little insight into what’s going on in the group so may interpret behaviours incorrectly, invalidating the study
what is a naturalistic observation
when the researcher does not control any variables and the observation is done in a real life situation
what’s good/bad about naturalistic observations
what’s a controlled observation
when the researcher controls some variables and the observation is done in an artificial environment
what’s good/bad about controlled observations
