correlation Flashcards
what is a correlation
a relationship between two co-variables
what is a positive correlation
when one co variable increase, the other co-variable also increases
what is a negative correlation
as one co variable increases the other co variable also decreases
write the frame for a 1 tailed correlation alternate hypothesis
there will be a positive/negative relationship between…. and…..
write the frame for a 2 tailed correlation alternate hypothesis
there will be a significant relationship between… and…
write the frame for a null correlation hypothesis
there is will be no significant relationship between… and…
what is the rule of thumb for correlation
the result has to be between -1 and 1
what is good about correlation
- they use quantitative data so fare easy to analyse and plot on a scatter graph
- they’re good to use as a background before starting more complex research
what is bad about correlation
it’s hard to establish cause and effect as there is no comparison between conditions
what are the 4 steps before the formula for spearman’s rank
- rank your scores separately
- work out the difference between the ranks
- square each difference
- add together all of the D2 column
does the calculated value have to be greater or less than the critical value
greater
