observation Flashcards
observation
when watching participants directly to gain data and information about their behaviour
structured observation
-uses pre-defined coding framework for recording data
-clearly outlined behavioural categories
unstructured observation
-recording data they can see
-no behavioural categories
-collect qualitative data about relevant behaviours
naturalistic observation
observing data in its natural habitat
controlled observation
-environment set up by the experimenter
-allows some control
participant observation
researchers are in some way part of the group of people whose behaviour is being observed
non-participant observation
researcher observes the behaviour of an individual/group without intruding into the situation
overt observation
participant is aware they are being observed
covert observation
participant isn’t aware they are being observed
behavioural categories
-breaks behaviour down into recordable categories
coding frames
operationalise behaviour to allow researcher to record observations
behaviour is categorised in a table
time sampling
recording behaviour for set times at set intervals
event sampling
behaviour is recorded every time it occurs
