Objective 11 Flashcards
Does generation of force achieved by activation of the actin-myosin cross-bridges affect the muscle fiber?
No. Generation of force does not necessarily cause shortening of the fiber
Explain the Principles of Muscle Mechanics as they apply to both the single fiber and the whole muscle
Contraction (cross-bridge formation) produces tension, the force exerted on the load or object to be moved.
When does shortening of the fiber occur?
Only when the tension generated by the cross-bridge exceeds oppositional forces (or loads)
What are the two types of muscle contractions?
Isometric
&
Isotonic
What is isometric contraction?
no shortening; muscle tension increases but does not exceed the load
What is isotonic contraction?
muscle shortens because muscle tension exceeds the load
What are the two types of Isotonic contraction?
Concentric
&
Eccentric
What is Concentric muscle contraction?
the muscle shortens and does work
What is Eccentric muscle contraction?
The muscle maintains tension as it lengthens
