Objective 1 Flashcards
Where is Skeletal Muscle Tissue attached?
Skeletal Muscle Tissue attaches to and covers the bony skeleton; attached to skin in some regions
Describe the cell structure of Skeletal Muscle Tissue
Skeletal Muscle Tissue has long, cylindrical multi-nucleated cells;
striated (has stripes=striations)
Describe the function of Skeletal Muscle Tissue?
Skeletal Muscle Tissue engages voluntary control (conscious control)
- Maintains upright posture, locomotion, manipulation of the environment, facial expression
- Generation of heat (~60% of muscle energy is given off as heat) to maintain core temp.
How does skeletal muscle tissue help control dangerous levels of heat?
Dangerous levels of heat are dissipated by dilation of cutaneous blood vessels
and activation of eccrine sweat glands
What are the skeletal muscle receptors?
Nicotinic (ACh)
Where is Cardiac Muscle Tissue located?
Cardiac Muscle Tissue occurs only in the walls of the heart
Describe the cell structure of Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Cardia Muscle Tissue cells are branching, short, 1-2 nuclei / cells; striated;
connect at junction known as the intercalated disc
Describe the function of Cardiac Muscle Tissue
Cardiac Muscle Tissue engages involuntary control
(self-generating contractions with autonomic influence)
- propells blood into circulation
What are the Cardiac Muscle Tissue receptors?
Muscarinic (ACh) and Beta (NE)
Where is Smooth Muscle Tissue located?
Smooth Muscle Tissue is located in the walls of hollow visceral organs,
such as the stomach, urinary bladder, and respiratory passages
Describe the cell structure of Smooth Muscle Tissue
Smooth Muscle Tissue cells are spindle-shaped cells with a central nucleus;
no striations;
cells are arranged in sheets
