Describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology of Chlamydia trachomatis

A

epidemiology: most common cause of STI + PID
- genital-to-genital
- oropharyngeal-to-genital

pathophysiology: must live inside host cell to reproduce
- elementary body enters WBC via phagocytosis
- uses nutrients to develop into reticulate body + reproduce via binary fission
- cell ruptures: reticule bodies released into extracellular matrix

What is the clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of Chlamydia trachomatis?

A

clinical presentation:
majority asymptomatic
both genders:
- urethritis: dysuria, polyuria
- proctitis: inflammation of rectal lining

female:
- salpingitis
- cervicitis
- PID symptoms

DX: nucleic acid amplification test

tx: doxycycline
alt: azithromycin (preg) or levofloxacin
