What S/E can you expect w/ methergine
There are two, rel. to CV
- HTN
- Stroke
What safety precaution should you be aware of before giving methergine?
Do not give to HTN clients and monitor BP
What is magnesium sulfate used for?
Used to prevent seizures d/t worseing preeclampsia
- Arrhythmias
- Decreased calcium
- Decreased deep tendon reflexes
- Decreased RR
- Decreased UO

What is turbetaline used for?
Supresses preterm labor
Terbatuline is considered a tocolytic, why?
Because it decreases uterine contractions
S/E of terbutaline?
- Tremors
- Nervousness
- Palpitations
- Hypotension
Any education for terbutaline?
You have to monitor HR & BP
Terbutaline is what type of agonist?
Beta 2 agonist
What is fentanyl used for in pregnancy?
Pain control
What are 3 SE for fentanyl?
- Respiratory depression
- Constipation
- Low HR + RR
What is the antidote for Fentanyl?
Narcan/Nalaxone
A pregnant woman has morning sickness, what med do you give her?
Phenergan
Also called promethazine
3 S/E for phenergan
- Confusion
- Sedation
- Headache
Education for phenergan?
Slow IV push and monitor RR
Due to its sedative effects
What is Stadol?
Opioid used to relieve pain during labor
S/E of Stadol?
Resp. depression
What would you want to monitor with Stadol?
Respiratory Rate
Hemabate, what is it used for?
- Causes smooth muscle contractions
- Terminates pregnancy (13-20)
- Treats PPH caused by uterine atony (boggy)
Hemabate is very similar to pitocin, why?
- Causes uterine contractions
- Treats PPH caused by uterine atony
S/E of hemabate
Arrhythmias, uterine rupture, HTN, bronco construction
Cyotec (Misoprostol), what is it used for?
-Induces labor
-Used for elective abortion
-Softens cervix/promotes cervical ripening
-Prevents uterine atony after delivery
How is Cytotec administed?
What form and where?
Tab, vaginally or rectally
Cervidil (Dinoprostone), what is it used for?
- Effaces and dilates cervix
- Stimulates uterine contractions
- Expels uterine contents
