SAB (r/t pregnancy)
Spontaneous abortion - A pregnancy that ends as a result of natural causes before 20 weeks of gestation (miscarriage)
CST (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Contraction stress test - Test to stimulate uterine contractions for the purpose of assessing fetal response.
Identify how a healthy fetus and how a compromised fetus respond during a CST.
(r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
A healthy fetus does not respond, where a compromised fetus demonstrates late decelerations in the fetal heart rate that are indicative of uteroplacental insufficiency.
NST (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Nonstress test - Evaluation of fetal response (fetal heart rate) to natural contractile uterine activity or to an increase in fetal activity.
AFP (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Alpha feto protein - Fetal antigen; elevated levels in amniotic fluid are associated with neural tube defects.
BPD (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Biparietal diameter - Largest transverse diameter of the fetal head; extends from one parietal bone to the other.
NTD (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Neural tube defect - Improper develoopment of tube resulting in malformation of brain or spinal cord; see alpha-fetoprotein.
What is the neural tube?
Tube formed from the fusion of the neural folds from which develop the brain and spinal cord.
AFI (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Amniotic fluid index - Estimation of amount of amniotic fluid by means of ultrasound to determine excess or decrease.
NB (r/t infant)
Newborn
APGAR (r/t infant)
APGAR score - Numeric expression of the condition of a newborn obtained by rapid assessment at 1 and 5 minutes of age.
AGA (r/t infant)
Appropriate (growth) for gestational age.

Large for gestational age
IUGR (r/t infant)
Intrauterine growth retardation - Fetal undergrowth of any cause, such as deficient nutrient supply or intruterine infection, or associated with gongenital malformation.
HBsAg (r/t infant)
Hepatitis surface antigen
MAS (r/t infant)
Meconium aspiration syndrome - Function of fetal hypoxia, with hypoxia the anal sphincter relaxes and the meconium is released : reflex gasping movements draw meconium and other particulate matter in the amniotic fluid into the infant’s bronchial tree, obstructing the airflow after birth.
Br (r/t infant)
Breastfeeding
FTP (r/t intrapartum)
Failure to progress
BOW/membranes (r/t intrapartum)
Bag of water - Lay term for the sac containing amniotic fluid and fetus.
AROM (r/t intrapartum)
Artificial rupture of membrane - Rupture of membranes using a plastic AmniHook or surgical clamp. Amniotomy.
PROM (r/t intrapartum)
Premature reuture of membranes - Rupture of amniotic sac and leakage of amniotic fluid beginning at least 1 hour before onset of labor at any gestational age.
GDM (r/t pregnancy problems)
Gestational diabetes mellitus - Any degree of glucose intolerance with its onset or first recognition occurrring during pregnancy.
(PIH) (r/t pregnancy problems)
Pregnancy induced HTN
DIC (r/t pregnancy problems)
Disseminated intravascular coagulation - Pathologic form of diffuse coagulation in which clotting that consumes large amounts of clotting factors, causing widespread external bleeding, internal bleeding, or both, and clotting. Also called consumptive coagulopathy.
Terb (r/t pregnancy problems)
Terbutaline - uterine relaxant - tocolytic - can cause fetal tachycardia.
vac/Mityvac del (r/t delivery)
Vacuum extraction delivery - Birth involving attachment of vacuum cup to fetal head and using negative pressure to assist in birth of the fetus.
VTX (r/t delivery)
Vertex presentation - Vertex; crown or top of the head. Presentation in which the fetal head is nearest the cervical opening and is born first.
EBL (r/t delivery)
Estimated blood loss
MLE (r/t delivery)
Midline episiotomy - Surgical incision of the perineum at the end of the second stage of labor to enlarge the vaginal outlet, facilitate birth ,and aviod laceration of the perineum.
VBAC (r/t delivery)
Vaginal birth after c/section - Giving birth vaginally after having had a previous cesarean birth.
BCPs/COCs (r/t pregnancy)
Birth control pills/combined oral contraceptives
TAB (r/t pregnancy)
Therapeutic abortion - Pregnancy that has been intentionally terminated for medical reasons.
cx (r/t pregnancy)
Cervix
oligo/polyhydramnios (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
low/high amniotic fluid level
BPP (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Biophysical profile - Noninvasive assessment of the fetus and its enviroment using ulrtasonography and uterine fetal monitoring; includes fetal breathing movements, gross body movements, fetal tone, reactive fetal heart rate, and qualitative amniotic fluid volume.
amnio (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Amniocentesis - Procedure in which a needle is inserted through the abdominal and uterine walls into the amniotic fluid: some fluid is withdrawn: used for assessment of fetal health and maturity.
OCT (r/t pregnancy diagnostics)
Oxytocin challenge test - Evaluation of fetal response (fetal heart rate) to contractile activity of the uterus stimulated by exogenous oxytocin (Pitocin)

low birth weight - Less than 2500 grams or 5lb 8oz
PKU (r/t infant)
Pheynl ketonuria - Recessive hereditary disease that results in a defect in the metabolism of the amino acid pheylalanine caused by the lack of an enzyme, phenylalanine hydroxylase. If not treated, brain damage may occur, causing severe mental retardation.
IDM (r/t infant)
Infant of diabetic mother
SVE (r/t intrapartum)
