What is LEADERSHIP?
The process of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts toward goal setting and goal achievement.
What does Yukl (2010) say about leadership and management?
Not all leaders are managers - not all managers are leaders
Why are Not all leaders are managers - not all managers are leaders?
- Management roles tend to aim for efficiency.
- Leader roles tend to aim for effectiveness.
What are the two main types of Leadership?
Interactional
Structural
What is Interactional Leadership?
Focused mainly on developing a relationship with/between employees.
What is Structural Leadership?
Focused on tasks and completing them to a degree of sufficiency.
What is Trait-Spotting?
Search for qualities of successful leaders
What is one problem with Trait-Spotting?
Not all traits are directly observable.
What are the 2 dimensions of Leadership?
- One-dimensional approach
- Multi-dimensional approach
What are the 3 main forms of leaders?
Authoritarian
Democratic
Laissez-faire
What does an Authoritarian leader do?
focus of power is with the leader, he excises decision-making, control of rewards and punishment etc.
What do Democratic Leaders do?
focus of power is with the group as a whole; leadership functions are shared; participative decision making; leader as part of the team
What does a laissez-faire Leader do?
leader observes members of the group are working well on their own; makes conscious decision to pass focus of power to members and not to interfere; allows freedom of action ‘to do as they think best’ is readily available if help is needed
What is Situational Leadership?
Good leaders should be able to adapt their style of leadership to meet the demands of the situation.
