- Partial tearing of the lig. w/ moderate tenderness and swelling around ankle
- If doc moves ankle in certain ways, there is abnormal looseness of ankle joint

- Complete tear of the ligament + significant tenderness and swelling around ankle
- If doc pulls or pushes the ankle joint in certain movements, substantial instability occurs
