Describe the differences between the soils of barolo
Helvetian (or Servallian) soil is older, less compact, and lower vigor. It is primarily composed of compressed sandstone. It’s found mostly on the eastern side of the Barolo region, and is especially prominent in the towns of Monforte, Castiglione Falletto, and Serralunga. Wines from Helvetian soil within Barolo typically show more “power” - greater structure and longevity, and more restrained in their fruit profile and aromatics.
Tortonian soil is younger, more compacted, and composed of primarily calcareous marl. Tortonian soil is younger by ~2/3 Million years, and it’s considered a more vigorous soil. It’s found mostly on the western side of the region, especially near the towns of Barolo and La Morra. Wines made from Tortonian soil within Barolo typically show more fragrance and fruit - easier to approach in their youth and softer in their tannin profile.
