Non-verbal communication
Transfer of meaningful information from one person to another by means other than written or spoken language, eg: gaze, facial expression, posture, touch.
Functions of NVC
Know others feelings and intentions (eg: non-verbal cues are usually reliable indicators of whether someone likes you) Regulate interactions (eg: eye contact in turn taking) Express intimacy Establish dominance Achieve a goal (eg: pointing)
Which is true about NV behaviour?
a) NVC is always noticable and has enormous impact
b) NVC goes unnoticed but has enormous impact
c) NVC is unnoticable but does not have a big impact.
d) NV behaviour is uncontrollable
b) NVC usually goes unnoticed but it has enormous impact. It can be controlled and although there are individual differences, social norms usually influence its expression.
Who came up with the 6 primary emotions theory?
Ekman (1982, 2003) (although Darwin proposed before this that there were a number of universal emotions expressed with particular facial expressions).
Display rules
Cultural and situational rules that dictate how appropriate it is to express emotions in a given context.
5 categories of touch identified by Jones & Yarbrough (1985)
1) Positive affect
2) Playful
3) Control
4) Ritualistic
5) Task-related
To these, negative affect can be added (gently pushing an annoying hand away) and aggressive touches (slaps, kicks, punches etc)
Proxemics
Study of interpersonal distance.
4 zones of space in social interaction
1) Intimate distance - up to 0.5m
2) Personal distance - 0.5-1.25m
3) Social distance - 1.25-4m
4) Public distance - 4-8m
