Cognitive neuroscience memory Flashcards
Long-term potentiation
Long term potentiation (LTP) occurs when a neuron shows an increased excitability over time due to the repeated synaptic input. The hippocampus uses long term potentiation during classical conditioning.
Habituation
Habituation occurs when an individual ceases to respond to a stimuli after a prolonged period of time, if the stimulus is not associated with any reward or punishment.
Sensitisation
Sensitisation is the strengthening of a response to a stimulus due to the response to a secondary stimulus. Sensitization: For example, if a loud sound is suddenly heard, an individual may startle at that sound. If a shock is given following the sound, then the next time the sound occurs, the individual will subsequently react stronger to the sound.
