nutritional imbalance Flashcards
nutritional imbalance
our bodes need optimal nutrient and having too much or too little can have negative impacts.
under consumption : Fruit, vegetables, dairy and fibre
over consumption : fat, salt, sugar
vegetables
rich source of antioxidants
have phytochemiclas protective factor against some cancers
under consumption = increase likelihood of buildup on artery walls –> increase risk of infectious disease
fruit
great source of vitamins and water, vital for good health as it is the medium for all chemical reactions
under consumption - fibre give good feeling of satiety, under consumption means people are likelier to consumption higher number of calories –> increased weight and obesity
dairy based foods
dairy related to foods made from animals
under consumption - lack of calcium in bones beans decrease strength, makes bones more likely for fractures –> increasing risk of osteoporosis
fibre
type of carbohydrate that the body does not digest
under consumption - because fibre is not digested by body it adds to a feeling of satiety –> promoting a lesser intake of calories –> increase risk of overweight / obese
two types of fibres
soluble fibres –> binding effect and can help the removal of blockages in artery walls
insoluble fibres –> add bulk to faces which promote regular bowel movement
fat
different types of fats that have different effects on the body, some good some bad
cholesterol
waxy fat like substance that our livers naturally produce –> several different functions including building cell walls
lipoproteins
substances that transport fat around the body
two types of lipoproteins
Low density (LDL) - infective cholesterol carriers and tend to deposit cholesterol on artery walls –> cause blockages
High density (HDL) prevent build up in arteries as they carry cholesterol to liver where its disposed of
