Leading cause of deaths in austrlia–> tobacco smoking –> burden of disease

smoking increase blood pressure bc of chemicals –> damage to blood vessels –> contributes to atherosclerosis (build up of plaque in artery walls –> slow down blood flow –> increase risk of heart attack
cancers
carcinogenic –> cause DNA damage –> healthy cells turn cancerous –> increase risk of lung cancer
respiratory conditions
inhaling smoke causes damage to respiratory tracks –> reduced air flow in lungs –> increase asthma
low birth weight babies
mothers smoke during pregnancy –> increase risk of child being born with low birth weight –> higher risk of premature death
sudden infant death syndrome
mothers who smoke during pregnancy increase risk of child suddenly dying –> due to level of nicotine they have in lungs
infectious disease
smoking lowers immune system function –> increase risk of prevalence or infectious disease (flu)
