What does the Nutrition information panels provide?
Nutrition information panels (NIP) on food labels provide information on the average quantity of energy in kilojoules or in kilojoules and kilocalories and nutrients.
Protein (NIP)
Proteins are made up of chemical ‘building blocks’ called amino acids.
Your body uses amino acids to build and repair muscles and bones and to make hormones and enzymes. They can also be used as an energy source.
Fat (NIP)
Fat (This is the total of the saturated fats, trans fat, polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats in the food)
Saturated Fat (NIP)
Listed separately from the Fat total
Sugars (NIP)
Sugars (A type of carbohydrate but is also listed separately from carbohydrates)
Sodium (NIP)
Sodium is the component of salt that affects health and high levels have been linked with high blood pressure and stroke, which is why it is included in the nutrition information panel
100g vs 100ml in Nutrition Panels
The ‘quantity per 100 g’ or 100 ml if liquid information is handy to compare similar products.
