Food Disorders or Illnesses Flashcards
What is Type 2 diabetes?
Diabetes occurs when the body cannot make proper use of the glucose in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is when the insulin can’t create insulin fast enough to process the glucose in the blood and is diet-related.
What is Coeliac disease?
Coeliac disease is a condition in which gluten (a type of protein) damages the lining of the intestine and stops the absorption of nutrients. It causes sensitivity to gluten, which results in inflammation and damage to the small intestine. Sometimes damage to the intestine is so severe that it results in the inability to absorb essential nutrients and leads to undernutrition.
What is Obesity?
Obesity is defined as being 20 per cent or more overweight.
What is Anaemia?
Prolonged iron deficiency can lead to anaemia, which means that there are decreased levels of haemoglobin in the blood and, therefore, less oxygen is reaching the body tissues.
What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the loss of bone density mass results in brittle bones. This means that the bones become thinner, more porous and therefore more liable to break.
What is Hypertension?
Hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure. It can be the result of a high-salt diet.
